Background

88% of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) incidents occur outside of hospitals, with survival rates less than 10%. However, the survival rates can be doubled (or even tripled) if Effective CPR is initiated immediately by a bystander or EMS.

The aim of chest compression is to restore blood flow to the brain and prevent permanent damage. Even Hands-Only CPR has proved to be as effective as the conventional CPR of mouth-to-mouth procedure.

Unfortunately, in many cases people are intimidated and do not provide CPR at all. In the remaining cases they provide ineffective CPR. The correct compression depth of 5 – 6 cm is difficult to gauge even for professionally-trained rescuers.

Beaty is a medical device developed by Medical Feedback Technologies Ltd.

Designed for lay-rescuers, Beaty increases sense of capability and confidence among its’ users by employing innovative, custom made pressure sensor to give real-time audio feedback on the effectiveness of CPR performed during rescue, allowing adjustments to the recommended compression depths of lay-rescuers.

It’s remarkably easy to use – place Beaty between the palm of the hand and in the middle of the victim’s chest. When the pressure depth of 5 cm is reached, a beep sounds.

Beaty should be used in any case where CPR is necessary. As gauging the exact compression depth is almost impossible, Beaty helps you by providing real-time audible feedback when applying adequate force during chest compression.

Beaty is designed to be simple and easy-to-use so that any person will be able to use it in the event of emergency.

The sketch on the device provide direct instructions on where to place it. After which, place the device between your palms and victim’s chest – start compressing until audio feedback is achieved. The “beep” sound provided by the device indicates you are compressing effectively.

Effective CPR is composed of several parameters, and not only compression depth. It is important to understand though, that medical emergencies are very stressful (especially when it comes to our loved ones).

Too much information provided by feedback device, during real time CPR, can confuse lay-rescuers and result in ineffective CPR. The major gap nowadays is in estimating compression depth (rate can be estimated by using other means) and many studies show sub-optimal compression depth, even among professionals.

Beaty is designed to be used on victims from 8 years old and above.

Beaty is designed for real-time CPR on a real person. As some manikins differ from human skeletal structure as well as chest recoil, Beaty may not work properly on these manikins (sponge manikins as an example).

In order to demonstrate Beaty during training and allow students to train with it, only “trainer units” should be used with Sheldon. Sheldon is a training tool that resembles a real person’s skeletal structure (sternum) that allows the use of of Beaty in training.

Beaty  runs on 3v lithium battery that last for more than 5 years on standby mode, or 15 hours of continuous CPR.
